About Me

Dr Anita Takwale is a Consultant Dermatologist with special interests in hair and nail disorders and skin cancer surgery. She undertook her training in India (Pune) and the UK (West Midlands and Bristol) before completing her surgery fellowship in Cardiff.

Anita has worked for the Gloucestershire NHS Hospitals Foundation Trust since 2008. After eight years as skin cancer lead for the Trust and chairperson of the 3 Counties Skin Cancer Network, Anita became the Trust’s dermatology surgery lead, a position she currently holds.

Through her initial training with Dr David De Berker, Anita gained an interest in hair and nail conditions that she has since developed. She is the current Clinical and Educational Lead for the British Hair and Nail Society and a member of the European Hair research society and the European Nail Society. She has gained an international perspective on her work through her sabbatical with Professor Rodney Sinclair in Melbourne and her attendance at specialised conferences - such as the International Summit on Nail Diseases in Greece and the World Congress for Hair Research in Japan.

In the UK, Anita provides a secondary and tertiary hair and nails referral service for the South West. The service includes facilities for Diphencyperone immunotherapy (for alopecia areata), as well as strong links with a dermatopathologist with an interest in hair and nail disease.

In addition to standard options, she also offers a new treatment to address hair thinning through 'Platelet Rich Plasma' at her practice (Patient Information PRP for Hair loss - final.pdf).

She is also involved in education and research, having been an invited speaker for multiple local, regional, and national educational meetings. In addition, she hosted the first National Nail Education day in 2017. She has been a reviewer for hair and nail papers, published articles in peer reviewed journals, and also written chapters for Lebwohl’s Treatment in Skin Disease and Brennan's Maxillo Facial Surgery.

Anita holds NHS clinics in Gloucester and Cheltenham. Her day surgery lists for skin cancer, and the specialist hair and nail clinics, are held at Gloucester Royal Hospital. She undertakes private practice at the Nuffield Hospitals, Cheltenham. She lives in Cheltenham with her husband, an Orthopaedic surgeon, and has two daughters.
